Radia

Radia is an international, informal network of radio stations who produce, share and broadcast radio art works. Since its inception in 2005 it has promoted a weekly radio art programme, each station taking turns in asking an artist of its choice to produce a radio art piece to be broadcast on all network stations. Besides this ongoing effort, Radia stations also participate and produce radio art programmes in the context of festivals and other contexts. More can be found about Radia at http://radia.fm and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radia.

In January 2019 there were 26 stations in the network, representing 19 different countries.

Show 556: Sounds of Between; J.B. Imbert for Radio Grenouille Sounds of Between Where are these sounds? Between the words. It is the chinks which we throw. They sometimes hide behind. The harmful garbage of our broadcasting. Microphone swallows sounds, all of them, the parasites, and in spite of our closed gates, it receives undesirables. All between ours speeches about the world, between words, this universe made of breathes and tongues smack, is too transmitted, stowaway of the waves. There...

Paul B. Preciado calls for the universal use of dildos in order to denaturalize sexuality, to infect it with a thing that is not a copy of a penis but an object that is both a way to appropriate the ass as the universal passive and non-reproductive organ that all people have and a way to multiply sexual acts, distributing them throughout the whole body. In this radio show, simply called “OM 29 – Co-Fi-Re (Conceptual Field Recording) 2”, I’ve tried to create an analogon to this notion of...

Show 600: Special Collage by Chuse Fernandez (Tea FM) 600 is a wonderful number. Can you hear it? The Radia Network emerged from a series of meetings, clandestine events, late night club discussions and a lot of email exchanges between cultural radio producers across Europe. The topics vary and the reasons for forming a network are many, but Radia has become a concrete manifestation of the desire to use radio as an art form. The approaches differ, as do the local contexts; from commissioned...

TATIN ! Let’s start with the recipe ! Collective realization of a sound-culinary experience The practice of sound can be conceived, thought and realized in a body, in a spirit, an author, an artist. But the sound can also be shared. And what’s better than the pleasures of the mouth to get in touch with the sound material. These sound materials brought by the participants of the Sound Studies of this season, are staged, implemented within a recipe that has become a graphic score. Everyone...

Is it as disrespectful to record the sound of the temple gong as it feels to photograph the scene? And in the process, is it thus disrespectful to record the Russian tour guide, and the screaming child, and the power tool, and rustle of velcro from camera bags? The syllable “spect” within respect is the same as in spectate, spectacle. Respectus via old French and thus Latin: the action of looking back. This implication of the seen within respect, does it let listening off the hook? Is it...

The Dirty Dozen This is the first Radia contribution out of Luxembourg. A dozen people got together to discover new ways of recording and radio making, thrilled by the infinite possibilities of radio art and wildly making use of any recording device they found. Intentionally focusing on sounds, noises and voices that usually just form the background of recordings – or are not recorded at all. Distracting reverbs, deformed languages, distortions and alien sound worlds have been surrounding us...
